Spotlight on Penny May: A Beloved Western Latham Community Member Championing Student Success

For more than three decades, Penny May has been a cherished part of the Western Latham School District—from driving buses to building strong relationships with students, families, and staff alike. Her dedication and care have made her a familiar and trusted face in the community.

In a recent GRIT video testimonial, Penny shares her heartfelt connection to Western High School and her excitement about the West LA Ecosystem, a growing program that provides students with hands-on, career-focused learning opportunities right on school grounds.

Penny speaks passionately about her role supervising students at the school’s food truck, one of the ecosystem’s most exciting components. For her, the joy comes not only from being with the students each day but also from watching them gain confidence, develop practical skills, and discover their own potential.

“My success will come when I see my students succeed in having skills and a job they look forward to doing.” Penny says in the video. “We work in this food truck, we laugh, and we have a good time!”
