Student Reflection: Tristan Moore’s Bear Tracks Journey into Cybersecurity & Community

The GRIT Summer Program at Shawnee State University doesn’t just build career skills — it builds confidence, community, and a sense of belonging. For Tristan Moore, a student in the Technology (Ethical Hacking) track, the experience left a lasting impression.

“Shawnee State not only equipped me with technical skills in cybersecurity, but it also gave me lasting memories, personal growth, and a sense of belonging that I’ll always carry with me.”

A Student’s Experience:

Submitted by Tristan Moore

During my time at Shawnee State University, I had the opportunity to dive deep into the world of ethical hacking, gaining hands-on experience with Kali Linux and exploring various types of cyberattacks and malware. This foundational knowledge not only sparked a greater interest in cybersecurity but also helped me build practical skills essential to the field.

Beyond the classroom, my experience at Shawnee was incredibly enriching on a personal level. I formed meaningful friendships and met people from diverse backgrounds, each contributing to an unforgettable chapter of my life. I took full advantage of everything the university and surrounding area had to offer — from discovering great local restaurants to participating in campus events that were always welcoming and full of energy.

The university’s hospitality stood out to me. The food served on campus was consistently delicious, and the dorms provided a cozy, home-like environment that made settling in easy. Whether I was studying or socializing, I felt a strong sense of community that made Shawnee feel like more than just a university — it felt like a second home.

Shawnee State not only equipped me with technical skills in cybersecurity, but it also gave me lasting memories, personal growth, and a sense of belonging that I’ll always carry with me.
